How to Label Boxes Like a Pro?

Labeling isn’t just scribbling “kitchen” with a marker — it’s a strategic step that can save you hours of chaos on moving day and during unpacking.

Here’s how to do it like the pros at VH1 Freight:

Use Color Codes by Room

Assign a unique color to each room (e.g., red for kitchen, blue for bathroom, green for bedroom). Use colored tape or stickers on all four sides of the box for quick identification — even when stacked!

Mark Fragile Boxes Clearly

Use bold lettering or a bright “FRAGILE” sticker on all sides of boxes with breakable items. Also mark “This Side Up” when necessary. This helps movers handle sensitive boxes with care.

Add a Numbering System

Instead of writing vague labels like “Stuff” or “Misc.,” number each box (e.g., Box #12) and keep a corresponding checklist. Example:

Box #12 – Kitchen Contents: Blender, utensils, cutting board

This makes inventory management and unpacking more organized — especially for cross-country or multi-day moves.

Label on Multiple Sides

Label at least two adjacent sides and the top of the box so it can be easily identified no matter how it’s stacked or turned.

Prioritize “Open First” Boxes

Clearly mark a few essential boxes as “Open First” — these should contain items like toiletries, chargers, a change of clothes, basic tools, or pet supplies. You’ll thank yourself after a long move-in day.

📦 Moving doesn’t have to be chaotic. Label smarter, unpack faster, and move confidently with VH1 Freight.
